Initial Oral Examination

We pride ourselves on being very different from most other dental offices you may have visited. Your first visit begins with our complete examination of your entire masticatory system. We will check your periodontal condition (gum disease), the health of your jaws (TMJ, TMD), the health of your teeth, your chewing muscles, and perform an oral cancer screening.

The periodontal examination begins with measuring the area between the gum and the tooth. This will tell us if there is any disease present in those areas. We will then check to see if your teeth have any unusual movement or loss of gum height around each tooth. This is done to make sure that the bone and gum tissue around each tooth is able to support the tooth properly. A thorough oral cancer screening will also be performed to rule out any pathology (disease).

The joint examination is next. We will be checking many aspects relating to your joints such as how far you can open, whether there are any pops, clicks or grating sounds present, and whether you are experiencing any pain or headaches. We sometimes will use Doppler auscultation (ultrasound) to listen to you joints in order to help determine their health and stability. Certain x-rays may be required to help confirm a diagnosis. An examination of the muscles of the head and neck will also be performed.

Your teeth will then be examined for unusual wear, broken fillings, decay, missing teeth, cracked teeth, painful teeth and more. If needed, diagnostic casts of your teeth will be recommended so that we may be able to analyze the way your teeth come together in order to check if your bite is even and smooth.

Once this has all been completed, we will review all of the information gathered and then have a consultation with you to discuss our findings. Plenty of time will be available for discussion and any questions that you may have. It is our goal to educated you as to what a healthy mouth is so that you can keep your whole mouth healthy for a lifetime. Complete oral health is our goal.

Crowns and Bridges

Currently we are using zirconium for our crowns.  Zirconium is incredibly strong and recent technology has allowed the lab to fabricate amazingly beautiful, life like restorations.  Crowns are typically used to restore a tooth's function and appearance when the existing restoration is too large to be restored with composite materials.  It is also commonly used after root canal treatment has been completed on a posterior tooth.  It is also used when the amount of decay is so great that too much of the original tooth structure is missing.  Sometimes crowns are used specifically for cosmetic procedures on mal-positioned, stained or malformed teeth.

Implants

Implants are man made structures made out of Titanium that are placed in the bone in the area of the tooth normally occupied by the root. Implants are placed in to the jawbone and the bone will actually integrate with the implant. The implant can then act as a foundation for a crown (an artificial tooth) or permanent bridge. In many cases, implants can be used to attach dentures.   This keeps the denture stable and allows for better chewing and function.

Headaches

Many people suffer from headaches and sometimes these can be severe affecting daily activities and interfering with life in general.  Many of these headaches can be the result of people clenching and grinding their teeth.  The clenching and grinding can also be triggers for migraine headaches as well.  We use a unique, night time, custom fabricated guard which actually prevents the individual from being able to contract their clenching muscles.  This can in most cases eliminate headaches associated with clenching and grinding and can also eliminate or minimize the frequency and duration of muscle induced migraine headaches.  We have had unbelievable results with this unique appliance over the years.  If you suffer from chronic headaches and have tried other options, give us a call. This is a drug free method and could be the answer you are looking for.

Toothaches

Toothaches are usually the result of decay that has worked its way to the nerve tissue within the tooth.  If this is the case,  root canal treatment or extraction are the only options.  If decay is not the issue, then trauma from clenching and grinding or the start of a fracture within the tooth can be the cause.  If the cause is just trauma, a simple adjustment of the tooth can sometimes be all that is needed.  If the tooth has a fracture, the tooth will usually need to be restored with a crown or porcelain onlay unless the fracture is extensive at which time extraction might be the best option.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canals are  necessary when decay reaches the nerve tissue that resides within the tooth.  If the tooth is worth saving, the root canal procedure removes the tissue from within the nerve canals and replaces it with a natural material called Gutta Percha.  This seals the canal system preventing and eliminating bacterial infection within the bone surrounding the tooth.  The root canal procedure should be painless and can usually be performed in a single visit.

Emergencies

Our goal is to help you to minimize the risk of emergency treatment. This is why we commit a generous amount of time designing a Lifetime Treatment Plan that will help you to offset the possibility of unforeseen pain or tooth breakage.  In the event that you are in pain, please call us.  If it is after hours, Dr. Bedell can be reached on his cell phone.  We are not an emergency clinic. However, Dr. Bedell will see patients of record and those currently not patients of record after hours. Those who are not patients of record must complete an initial examination and x-rays after their emergency visit in order to be seen again on an emergency basis.
